Orpheus BG3, How to free Orpheus in Baldurs Gate 3

Baldurs gate 3 how to free orpheus - As you approach the end of Baldur's Gate 3, one of the quests you encounter will give you several options related to Orpheus' character that could free him or lead to his death. The Emperor captured the Prince of the Githyanki and nearly consumed his brain. Depending on your choices along your journey, freeing Orpheus could be an easy task or a huge sacrifice.

Freeing Orpheus is part of a personal quest that appears in Act 3 of Baldur's Gate 3, where your party must travel to the Astral Plane. This quest has particular importance to Lae'Zel, who remains loyal to the Githyanki royalty despite the events of the game. The strong fighter will insist on saving Orpheus, but those who have chosen Lae'Zel as an Origin character may not recognize his strong ties to the Prince.

There are two paths that help you free Orpheus in Baldur's Gate 3, either using the Orphic Hammer to break his chains or sacrificing a character to become a Mind Flayer. The Emperor wants to turn Orpheus into a Mind Flayer by eating his brain. To prevent this, he must offer an alternative character or even choose to become a Mind Flayer to protect the Prince from such a horrible fate.

These options are presented after you have collected all three Netherstones from the events of Baldur's Gate 3. These artifacts will help your party reach one of the final areas of the game, the Morphic Pool in the north of the Undercity Ruins. Make sure your party has tried or in the red, Lord Gortashy Thorm ceteric before thinking of ways to save Orpheus.

One of the options the Emperor will give you to free Orpheus is to hand over the Netherstones, but while this choice recruits the Mind Flayer as an ally, it will still eat the Prince's brain.

On the other hand, the legendary weapon Orphic Hammer can be used to break Orpheus' bonds without a character being mind-eaten. However, this tool can only be found through exploration, making it a difficult item to find if you need to pay attention to secondary content. You will have to travel to Avernus, the first layer of the Nine Hells, to collect the Hammer early in Baldur's Gate 3.

How to get the Orphic hammer in Baldur's Gate 3 (BG3)

The Orphic Hammer belongs to the Cambion demon Raphael, who will gladly hand over the weapon in exchange for the Crown of Karsus once the Absolute is struck down. Dealing with a demon is dangerous, since their pacts are binding and hardly lead to a good outcome. After finding the Netherstones in Baldur's Gate 3, Raphael will fulfill his deal if your character accepts his terms.

Your character can get out of any deal you make with Raphael for stealing the physical infernal contract from the House of Hope, preventing the devil from using the incredible power of the Crown.

Another way to collect the Hammer is to rob Raphael in his fortress, the House of Hope. Getting caught will mean fighting Raphael directly while your party tries to escape. This demon is nearly impossible to defeat even when your party is at the maximum level cap in Baldur's Gate 3, but those with ridiculously high Sleight of Hand and Stealth could swipe the hammer and flee without invoking the Cambion's wrath.

When you have the Orphic Hammer and meet Orpheus, break the two crystals creating the Prince's bindings after declaring his intentions to the Emperor. The Mind Flayer will then leave to be assimilated into the Netherbrain and act as an enemy at the end of Baldur's Gate 3.

Can you save Orpheus through sacrifice in Baldur's Gate 3 (BG3)?

In case you couldn't get the Hammer, Karlach will suggest becoming a Mind Flayer instead of Orpheus while you talk to the Emperor. According to Karlach, his days were numbered anyway due to the explosive nature of his Infernal Engine. Unfortunately, Karlach's transformation won't be complete until she eats Orpheus's brain, so this option doesn't actually free the Prince.

If you don't want to let one of Baldur's Gate 3's best companions die, you always have the option of letting your character become a Mind Flayer. While this may seem tragic, you could easily create a new custom character that can lead the party to the final events of the game. This decision also does not spare Orpheus's brain from being part of his lunch, however, even though the Emperor said it could be.

Those who have Lae'Zel in her party while attempting to free Orpheus should be careful not to suggest letting the prince die, as only a DC 30 Persuasion check will prevent Lae'Zel from attacking the entire party in anger.

Surprisingly, Orpheus can also voluntarily become a Mind Flayer after using the Orphic Hammer, preventing anyone in your party from having to make a sacrifice. When you talk to the Prince, say: "Someone will have to become a Mind Flayer. Are you willing to do that?«. This will cause Orpheus to offer his mind on his terms, saving anyone in his immediate group from a grim fate.

Orpheus acts as a Monk who remains in his Githyanki form who joins your party after being saved, becoming a solid ally who could help out in future battles. The "Gather Your Allies" quest towards the end has you calling on all the friendly NPCs you've met to help your party in the final battle. Orpheus is a welcome addition to this group, providing strong melee abilities that can only be performed if you manage to free the Prince in Baldur's Gate 3.
